Distinguished and Famous people from South East Queensland
🌿 Oodgeroo Noonuccal
Oodgeroo Noonuccal's life connected Minjerribah, or North Stradbroke Island, with national debates about Aboriginal rights. Known earlier as Kath Walker, she became widely recognised after the publication of We Are Going in 1964. Poetry, civil rights campaigning and education remained linked in her work. She returned to the island and established Moongalba as a place where children could learn about Aboriginal culture and the environment. Her public career also included wartime army service, a chapter less often recalled than her writing. The island was a place of upbringing, community responsibility and teaching, giving South East Queensland a substantial connection with her achievements.
📚 David Malouf
David Malouf was born in Brisbane in 1934 and educated at Brisbane Grammar School and the University of Queensland. His literary career ranged across poetry, novels, stories, essays and opera libretti. Johnno, his first novel, appeared in 1975, while the autobiographical 12 Edmonstone Street returned to the detail and imaginative significance of a childhood home. Periods teaching and travelling overseas broadened his experience without erasing those Queensland beginnings. He also adapted Patrick White's Voss for opera, an example of his movement between literary forms. Brisbane supplies the documented birthplace and education behind a body of writing that reached readers in many countries and languages.
🏊 Grant Hackett
Grant Hackett was born at Southport in 1980 and joined coach Denis Cotterell's Gold Coast squad at twelve. He developed into an outstanding distance swimmer, winning the Olympic 1500-metre freestyle at Sydney in 2000 ahead of his former idol Kieren Perkins. Four years later he defended the title at Athens despite respiratory problems. His bid for a third consecutive victory ended at Beijing in 2008, where Oussama Mellouli beat him by just 0.69 seconds. That narrow finish followed thirty lengths of the pool. Hackett's early training on the Gold Coast helped build the endurance and racing ability behind those Olympic performances.
